Leadership truth - Never ass u me
As regular visitors to the site would know, we recently welcomed a baby boy into the family. A few weeks ago, my wife and I decided to check out some suitable venues for a small family get together for the Christening.
With Baby Conor in toe, we dined out at a potential venue - midway through the meal we decided to enquire off the waiter what would be the modus operandi of booking the event there. The waiter advised me that he would get the manager to discuss the possibilities with us.
Before I continue, I want you to think through the type of advice you would give a salesperson in your company if they were trying to win this contract.
Well the manager arrived sat beside Baby Conor and made his pitch.
Not at any stage did he make even the slightest of reference to the person who probably had the most influence in the decision making process - Conor!
No “is this the man himself…..isnt he lovely…how are you…nothing!!!” I was dumbfounded at his incompetence.
It reminded me of the advice a businessman shared with me years ago as I was beginning my careeer. He said never assume because it makes an ass out of u and me….how right he was.
Dont just sweat the small stuff as the late Richard Carlson asserted - live the small stuff!
