Leadership Insights from Colin Powell
1. Communication Excellence - everybody understands:
“Great leaders are almost always great simplifiers, who can cut through argument, debate and doubt, to offer a solution everybody can understand.”
2. Belief - the Leadership Drug:
“Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier.”
3. People, then profits:
“Organisation doesn’t really accomplish anything. Plans don’t accomplish anything either. Theories of management don’t much matter. Endeavours succeed or fail because of the people involved. Only by attracting the best people will you accomplish great deeds.”

Rapport Insight
“Two monologues don’t make a dialogue.” This quote was shared with me recently by my South Asia colleague, Peter Rolston.
Those attempting to develop their Leadership ability or entreprenuerial flair should be very aware that monologues and/or presentations dont work in the contact of building rapport.
We need to move from monologue to dialogue, and from presentations to conversations.
Exercise observe your own communication patterns today - are you listening to people or just waiting to continue your presentation?

Leadership Analysis
First hours….then minutes…..then seconds….now milliseconds.
What am I referring to?
This is the amount of time it takes us to analyse someone under the following headings: Trustworthiness, Aggressiveness, Attractiveness, Likeability and Competence.
This is according to research conducted by Willis and Todorov in Princeton University.
And, as reported in earlier research by Rosenthal, people don’t tend to change their opinion even if they are given longer to look.
So how do we ensure that these microencounters are positive?
The Leadership Secret - work on yourself.
The more you work on yourself, the more you will project a positive position without even opening your mouth.
Whne you consider that both your employees and customers are judging you in milliseconds, it shows how important it is that you and your team are fully turned on to your mission and values. With no time to act, who you truly are will shine out at them like a light.
