"Thanks" and "Well done" have the power to effect real positive change in the workplace. They cost nothing, yet many are reluctant to use them.
Changing your choice of words eg "problem" to "challenge" can have a direct positive effect on your outcomes.
Some people use alot of words to get them the attention they so desire.
Only words!

Recently a friend of mine was wandering around town, deep in thought about whether or not to help her son realise his "dream" - the purchase of a new car.
In order for him to get the new car, they would have to cough up the cash, which he promised to pay back. The only problem was that he was always borrowing, and never ever paid back!
Not dissuaded by the later, she was really aware of how much he wanted this car, but wondering about whether or not helping him to buy it was the right thing to do. As she was going down an escalator in a certain shop, she saw two women coming up on the opposite side.
Coincidentally, as they passed, one said to the other 'if you keep giving him money, he's never going to learn.'
Her dilemma had been solved - he didn't get the car!
Now months later, she knows it was the right decision.

A 5% decrease in customer defection can result in excess of twenty per cent increase in profitability according to Bain and Co.
The average business never hears from 96% of it's unhappy customers. These people invariably tell nine to ten other people about their negative experience.
Opportunity knocks!
An unhappy customer whose complaint was satisfactorily resolved will tell up to five people about the positive treatment they received.
(Research compiled by TARP, USA.)
It is obvious as highlighted in a past entry that you either get people complaining or watch them leave. This requires a little more than, "was everything all right" approach.
